Administrative / Biographical History
Incorporated in 1956 as a joint venture between Lipton Ltd and the James Finlay & Co Group. The company was created following successful experimental work carried out for the purpose of manufacturing a tea concentrate under a process patented by an American researcher. This experimental work was 50% funded by Lipton Ltd, and following its success the partnership was set up as a limited company for the purposes of selling the product. Lipton Ltd held 50% of the company and 4 of the Finlay Group tea companies, as well as James Finlay & Co itself, held the remaining 50% of shares: Amalgamated Tea & Lands Co (18%); Kanan Devan Co (9%); Anglo-American Co (9%); African Highlands Produce Co (9 per cent); and James Finlay & Co (5%). The company minutes record that to avoid complications with the Indian Government, the agreement between the patent holder and Finlays would be made in the name of The African Highlands Produce Co. The company was dissolved in 1998 .
