Scope and Content

A collection of autograph and signed documents and letters, and excised signatures, mostly English but including some French and other foreign material. The earlier material consists mainly of royalty, peers and statesmen; the later material includes men of letters, arts and science. Mostly arranged by dates of death. Mounted together with engravings and other illustrative and printed material; biographical information with each subject. Card index in SAL. The collection was formed by Lady Vincent (Augusta Elizabeth Herbert, daughter of the Hon. Charles Herbert, second son of Henry, 1st Earl of Carnarvon, and Bridget, daughter of John (Byng), 5th Viscount Torrington); she married, 1824, Sir Francis Vincent, 10th Bt., and died 1876. Their daughter, Blanche, married, 1871, John Raymond Cely Trevilian (sometime officer in the 3rd Buffs, d. 1884), and inherited the estate of Debden Hall, Essex, from her father (d.s.p. m. 1880; see G. E. Cokayne, Complete Baronetage, I (1900), 159). The later autographs include many letters of or to members of the Herbert and Byng families. The summary at file level is highly selective. (als = autograph letter signed; alls = autograph letters signed; 1s = letter signed)
