Administrative / Biographical History

The province of York consists of 14 dioceses, a unit within which the bishop has jurisdiction under the supervision of the Archbishop. Over many hundreds of years new dioceses have been created, dioceses have dissolved and others have seen their boundaries increase and decrease.

Blackburn (1926), Bradford (1919), Carlisle (1133), Chester (created 1541 - transferred to province of York 1542), Durham (995), Liverpool (1880), Manchester (1847), Newcastle (1882), Ripon&Leeds (Ripon, 1836, Ripon&Leeds from 1999), Sheffield (1914), Sodor&Man (became part of the York Province 1542), Southwell (1884 - transferred to York 1935), Wakefield (1888), York (627).
