Scope and Content

An audio recording of the opening radio broadcast of the BBC Empire Broadcasting Service which features J H Whitley (Chairman of the BBC) and Sir John Reith (Director-General of the BBC). The audio recording is stored on a compact disk in CD Audio Track (.cda) format. The recording came from (and was originally digitised by) the BBC Sound Archive.

Together with the audio recording are some research notes concerning this broadcast, includng: a transcript of J H Whitley's speech on the recording; a printed copy of an article on the BBC's website concerning the foundation of the BBC's world Service (http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/history/story/2007/02/070123_html_1930s.shtml, accessed in June 2016) and a photocopy of a newspaper article containing letters of appreciation/memories of J H Whitley by Sir Alexander Mackenzie Livingstone, "D.S.M" and Edward Miles.

Custodial History

Mr John Whitley gifted these items to the University of Huddersfield Archive Service. They were delivered by Professor Paul Ward on 07/06/2016 who collected them from John Whitley at a recent meeting between themselves and Dr John Barrett.
