John Henry Whitley (1866-1935) was Speaker of the House of Commons from 1921 to 1928, but during his lengthy and varied career he was also a Halifax mill owner, a champion of universal education, a revered local politician, Chairman of the Royal Commission on Labour in India (which reported in 1931) and Chairman at the BBC (1932-1935).
