The University's revised charter of 1973 mandated that academic departments (with a few exceptions) establish departmental boards; some departments had set up such boards before this period. Geology is believed to have had a departmental board from at least 1973. The boards were charged with organising those aspects of the department's academic work which were not within the scope of the Faculty Board and Senate. Students were represented on these boards. In practice, the boards discussed a wide range of academic and administrative issues. Board papers for the 2000-2004 period may includes minutes of junior committees.
