Scope and Content

12 posters illustrating European national costumes from Belgium, Portugal, Holland, France, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria. The coloured illustrations are accompanied by explanatory text.

Administrative / Biographical History

This set of 12 posters was issued by the Department of Education of the International Wool Secretariat, then based at Dorland House, SW1. The International Wool Secretariat is now the Woolmark Company. According to a note in the Children's Newspaper of March 1954, the set cost 7s 6d. The posters were illustrated by artists including the well known book illustrator Edward Mortelmans (1915-2008). They were designed and produced by C.J. Lytle (Advertising) Ltd and printed by Alabaster, Passmore and Sons Ltd.

Acquisition Information

The posters were purchased as a fashion and textiles teaching resource and held in the Library before being transferred to the Archive.
