Administrative / Biographical History

The peculiar jurisdiction of the prior and convent (later the dean and chapter) of Durham in Howdenshire and Hemingbrough comprised Howden, Asselby, Barlby, Barmby Marsh, Blacktoft, Brantingham, Eastrington, Ellerker, Hemingbrough, Holtby, Laxton, Skipwith, Walkington and Welton. These records are located at York because the deputy registrar of the peculiar was resident in the city and practised as a proctor in the ecclesiastical courts.
