Administrative / Biographical History

This United States sealing voyage, 1819-1820 (Captain James P Sheffield) was one of many such voyages to the southern oceans. While searching for the 'Aurora Islands' they found Shag Rocks. Visits were made to the Falkland Islands and South Shetland Islands in January 1820. Around 8,868 fur seal pelts were taken from headquarters established on Rugged Island (New Zealand).
