Scope and Content

Johnstown Board/Council school opened on the 27th August 1900 with 180 children enrolled. By the 3rd September 1900 the number of pupils had risen to 236 and these were being taught in three seperate classrooms (ED/LB/92/2).

By 1911 the infants classroom was overcrowded as provision had been made for 96 but 117 were in attendance (ED/AR/92/1).

The school received an excellent H.M.I. report in 1924 (ED/LB/92/2) however this report made reference to the need to improve the state of the premises and a year later a County Buildings sub committee met to discuss a new classroom for the infants and alterations to the building.
