Scope and Content

A manuscript bound with three printed works and newspaper cuttings, probably collected together by Albert William Woods. The volume comprises:

  • John Philipot (?1589-1645), A perfect collection: or catalogue of all Knights batchelaurs made by King James since his comming to the crown of England (London: 1660), pasted on stubs;
  • English MS 477 (33 folios) comprising a transcript of 'Catalogue of knights made by King Charles I' chronologically arranged, with an alphabetical table by Sir Richard St George Fox (Harleian MS 6062 f. 336); the transcript is dated 1853 and was possibly made by Sir Thomas Phillipps;
  • Francis Townsend, Catalogue of knights, from 1660 to 1760 (London: printed by Harjette and Savill, 1833), with some annotations;
  • Francis Townsend, Calendar of knights: containing lists of Knights bachelors... from 1760 to the present time (London: William Pickering, 1828), formerly belonged to Philip Herve;
  • Series of newspaper cuttings pasted onto paper, listing honours etc. from the 1880s to 1903.

The British Library, Manuscript Collections, holds the original manuscript on which English MS 477 is based (ref.: GB 0058 Harleian MS 6062 ).

Bibliography

In 1853 Sir Thomas Phillipps privately published an edition of the Harleian manuscript entitled Catalogue of knights made by King Charles I. ab ao. 1624 ad ann. 1646.
