Scope and Content

Hardwick is a village to the north-east of Oxfordshire not far from Bicester. The neighbouring village of Tusmore has long been part of this parish, which is therefore often called Hardwick with Tusmore.

Hardwick was frequently held in plurality with neighbouring parishes, such as Hethe or Cottisford, but it was not until 1983 that it was combined with the parishes of Finmere with Mixbury, Cottisford, Newton Purcell and Shelswell. They have now been joined with Fringford, Godington, Hethe, Stoke Lyne and Stratton Audley to form the united benefice of Shelswell.

All the following records were originally deposited with the Bodleian Library in 1978, except for PAR123/2/A1/1, which was deposited here at Oxfordshire Archives in 1987 as part of Accr 2698, and PAR123/1/R3/3 and R7/1, which were deposited in 1997 as Acc 4214. Further records were deposited as Acc 5919 in December 2009, Acc 6635 in November 2017 and Acc 6917 in November 2021. An Appendix provides a concordance of old and new references.

Recatalogued by Robin Darwall-Smith in March 1997, with additions by Hannah Jones, December 2009 and Alison Smith in December 2017 and September 2022.
