The material includes papers relating to the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coalowners' Association, The South Wales District (Coal Mines) Scheme, The Mining Association of Great Britain and the South Wales Miners' Federation. Subjects covered within the subfonds include railways and canals (including a volume concerning details of shipment of Blaengwawr Steam Coal by canal and rail, 1851-1859), wages, sale and export of coal, wages, training, welfare and the coke industry. Includes papers of Alexander Bassett, Mining Engineer concerning the Alexandra (Newport) Docks and the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company and papers of other individuals, including notebooks and a technical essay. Also includes volumes of newspaper cuttings concerning a variety of aspects of the coal industry prior to nationalisation and volumes concerning Park Water Works and Treharris Power Station.

Custodial History
This subfonds is made up of material brought together from different accessions (see below for full list) deposited by the National Coal Board and the British Coal Corporation. Some files were clearly kept within the National Coal Board's records management system but the provenance of some of the material is not clear. Where it has been possible to associate material with particular colliery companies, material has been split from the original accessions and catalogued with records of the individual companies.
