Scope and Content

Collection of personal papers relating to Miss Florence Nellie Budd of Woodstock (1904-1977).

Florence ('Flossie') was the fourth child of Henry Watkins Budd and Ellen Maria Budd (née Patterson), the only one of their children who survived into adulthood. Involved in the Girl Guide Movement from childhood, she eventually became President of Woodstock District Girl Guides. She became a Woodstock Borough Councillor in the 1960s and held the position of Deputy Mayor in the early 1970s.

One of the older families in Woodstock, the Budds had been bakers in the town from the foundation of the business by James Gibbons Budd in the late 18th century until the death of Florence's uncle George in 1938. The business operated for much of this period from 18 High Street - 16 and 18 both appearing to be Budd family homes. On her death in 1977, Florence was the last of several generations of Budd family members based in the town

The collection primarily comprises diaries, reminiscences, photographs, postcards and other ephemera created or collected by Florence.

The records were gifted in several sections between 1975 and 1977 as accessions 1166, 1176, 1410 and 1415 and as accession 5883 in 2009.

The majority of the records were previously catalogued under reference Budd. Recatalogued by Katherine Kinrade and Becky Hogben in October 2023.
