Scope and Content

Numbered weekly recipes produced by the Cardiff Gas Light and Coke Company. Each recipe has an illustration of a woman using a gas cooker on its front together with the following statement

In response to numerous requests, our lady

demonstrator has compiled a series of

practical recipes - especially prepared for

cooking with a gas cooker.

Overleaf is another of this series, and

subsequently a different recipe - carefully

arranged according to 'seasons' - will be

available each week.

These leaflets are obtainable at any of

our showrooms, or will be forwarded, by

post, on publication, each week to any con-

sumer making application

At the bottom front of each recipe are the names of the Company's offices namely, Bute Terrace and Queen Street, Cardiff, Stanwell Road, Penarth, Church Road, Whitchurch and Taffs Well

The reverse details the week's recipe including ingredients and method and the following statement

The services of our Lady Demonstrator are at your disposal at any time to

assist you or to give any information regarding the use of a gas cooker.

Her services are free, and if at any time your cooker falls short of giving

complete satisfaction please do not hesitate to call in her assistance.

Administrative / Biographical History

Cardiff Gas Light and Coke Co was founded in 1837 with its plant and offices in Bute Terrace/ Whitmore Lane. A gas works was opened in Grangetown in 1863, and the Bute Terrace offices were rebuilt in 1895-1896. By the 1930s the employment of Lady Demonstrators in the gas industry was well established. Often trained cookery teachers they provided instruction in the use of gas cookers.
