Scope and Content

2 volumes recording details of smallpox patients admitted to Knightswood Hospital during the epidemic of 1950.

Administrative / Biographical History

Knightswood Hospital opened in 1877, jointly serving the burghs of Hillhead, Maryhill and Partick. It became a Glasgow Corporation hospital when the city boundaries were widened in 1912. Its capacity was expanded over the next 30 years, and by the time of the creation of the National Health Service it was catering for smallpox and tuberculosis patients. With the birth of the NHS, Knightswood came under the Board of Management for Glasgow Western Hospitals, and took on cardiology, neurology and respiratory medicine units in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of the specialty units in the hospital were eventually relocated to the Western Infirmary, and Knightswood became a geriatric unit before finally closing in March 2000.
