Scope and Content

Wolvercote Mill began making paper in the late 17th century and was soon supplying the Oxford University Press. The mill was bought by Thomas Combe in 1855 and was rebuilt in 1856, supplying OUP with paper up until it's closure in 1997.

Thomas Brittain took over the business of the Fourdrinier at Hanley in Staffordshire in 1855. In 1890 his grandson Thomas Arthur Brittain bought another mill at Cheddleton and incorporated them both as Brittains Ltd. Brittains Ltd had been supplying Wolvercote with India paper since 1875 but only purchased the lease in the 1970s. Brittains went into receivership in 1978 and Wolvercote was bought by the Star Paper Mill of Feniscowles near Blackburn in 1980. The site was then leased by South African Paper and Pulp before production ceased in 1997.

Alfred Towgood began working at Arbourfield Mill near Reading, but after this mill burnt down in 1861, he bought a mill at Helpston in Lincolnshire. By 1904 the business was listed as Towgood and Beckwith Ltd.

These records were deposited as Acc 4390 in September 1998. Catalogued by Alison Smith in November 2019.
