Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
These designs are unattributed but their geometric, abstract motifs and stylised floral designs painted in bright colours suggest that they were executed in Belgium. Dealers have attributed them to René Magritte (1898 - 1967), Victor Servrancx (1897 - 1965) or Edgard Tytgat (1879 - 1957), all of whom reputedly worked on this type of design in the early stages of their artistic careers. However, the extensive use of flat areas of color and rhythmical abstract patterns as well as the predominant palette of greys and the hard-edged geometric precision indicates a close resemblance to Viktor Servranckx's work in particular. Both him and René Magritte are known to have worked as designers at the Peters-Lacroix wallpaper factory in Brussels between 1918 - 1925.
