UMIST Library Archive

Scope and Content

A small fragmentary archive for the UMIST library dating to the beginnings of the Municipal School of Technology. The Library was always relatively small, and this is reflected in the volume and type of records generated. There are a small number of accession registers (TLA/1), Librarian's Bulletins (TLA/2), guides (TLA/3), papers relating to the 1980s Library redevelopment plan (TLA/4) and a small amount of miscellaneous material. It does not appear that the Librarian's administrative files have been retained other than those in TLA/4.

Administrative / Biographical History

The UMIST library had its origins in the library of the Manchester Mechanics' Institution. The College of Technology building, which opened in 1902, had its library on the C floor (facing Sackville St). With the completion of the extension of the Main Building extension in 1957, the library moved to floors D-F of this new building (in the eastern section). These premises were greatly extended in a redevelopment project in the mid-1980s. When completed in 1987, the library was formally renamed the Joule Library. In the 1990s, the UMIST library operated at branch library at the Precinct Centre at the Oxford campus (this focussed on business and social sciences). In 2004, the UMIST library merged with the library of the University of Manchester (then known as the John Rylands University Library of Manchester); the Library continued to operate services at the Joule site until 2022.
