Harold Salvesen collection

The collection comprises of correspondence by Salvesen to H Gordon Hays regarding whaling in the southern ocean and Graham Land (Antarctic Peninsula)

Harold Kenneth Salvesen was born circa 1897, the son of Theodore Salvesen, a pioneer of modern Antarctic whaling. He was educated in Edinburgh and joined the Indian Army in 1917, serving for four years as war-time and peace-time officer. In 1921, he returned to Britain to study at New College, Oxford, where he became a fellow and tutor in economics. In 1928, he left New College to join the family firm of Christian Salvesen and Co. of Leith, Scotland, as a whaling manager. From 1934 Salvesen took a leading part in various international agreements to restrict the Antarctic catch and to preserve the stock of whales, and was appointed chief adviser of the whaling industry to the British government. Retiring from the management of Christian Salvesen and Co. in 1960 and from the chairmanship of the South Georgia Co. Ltd. in 1967, he died on 1 February 1970.
