Scope and Content

Report on SS Penthames by Manley Hopkins, Son and Cookes, Adjusters of Averages, 9 Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff

Administrative / Biographical History

The SS Penthames was a steamship built in Glasgow in 1909. The ship was damaged on a voyage sometime between August and October 1934, coming aground in Cape Huertas before being refloated and proceeding to Alicante. Some of the cargo was jettisoned. At the time of the incident the ship was in the ownership of the Pentirion Steamship Company, Baltic House, Cardiff. The master was W Bullock and the Engineer Superintendent was Thomas William Barnett.

The enquiry into the incident was carried out by the firm of Manley Hopkins, Son and Cookes, a firm of average adjusters, claims specialists working in marine insurance. The firm was established in London in 1844. It had an office in Mountstuart Square, Cardiff from the early 1890s until at least 1997, and branches in Liverpool, Hull, Newcastle and West Hartlepool.

The SS Penthames was later bombed and sunk off Valencia in May 1938, during the Spanish Civil War.
