Scope and Content

Large carpet design sketches and patterns dating from the 1950s to the 1980s. All are pictorial and subjects include, for example, landscapes, the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Tower Bridge in London and the Colosseum in Rome. The drawer also contained a pattern for a rug featuring Robert Burns and emblems of his native Ayrshire, as well as a pattern for a carpet to commemorate the investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales, which took place in 1969. Designs generally consist of several seperate pieces of paper and have therefore been catalogued as single items with multiple parts. Where items are folded and stapled or clipped together the size recorded is that when folded. The majority have been given a design number, some are dated, while a few also note contract details.

This description is part of the Design Archive  which is divided into the 142 sections, each with its own separate description.
