Charles Maisey grew up in Witney. He started a career as an apprentice teacher at the Wesleyan School in Witney, but grew tired of teaching. In 1887, he joined the Merchant Navy. His diaries record the early part of his life, describing his family, his teaching, and his enjoyment of the countryside around Witney. Later diaries cover the first few years of his career as a sailor, and his impressions of countries all over the world.
