The South Wales Fire and Rescue Authority was created on 1 April 1996 following local government reorganisation. It runs the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service for ten local authority areas: Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan. It was created by merging the fire brigades in Mid Glamorgan, South Glamorgan and Gwent.
The South Wales Fire and Rescue Authority which runs the service is a board made up of councillors from the ten local authority areas.
