Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Following the Aberfan Disaster the National Coal Board proposed to partially level, terrace and landscape the existing tips on the hillside above Aberfan. This proposal was rejected by the inhabitants of the village and a committee was formed to pursue the objective of complete removal of the tips. A committee was formed comprising seven nominated members, four representatives of the Parents and Residents Association Committee and the four ward members on the County Borough Council in order to campaign for their removal. Thomas Stanley Price initially took on the role of Chairman of the Committee but in a meeting held on the 1st December 1966 he proposed that a chairman with more knowledge of the matter should be appointed and Mr Price was nominated to be Secretary of the Committee instead. It was eventually agreed that the tips would be removed and the area be re-landscaped but part of the cost associated with this must be met by the local community. The Aberfan Disaster Fund eventually contributed £150,000 to the scheme which was repaid by the government in 1997.
Thomas Stanley Price, born 1917, was a resident of Aberfan at the time of the disaster and worked as a rating officer for Merthyr Borough Council. When the committee disbanded Thomas Stanley Price and other members of the committee formed the Ynysowen Male Voice Choir. He was secretary of the choir for many years.
