Scope and Content

Records mostly relating to ships registered at Port of Chester, 1863-1913, consisting of ship's agreements and crew lists. They contain information on the tonnage, owner and master of each ship, destination of voyages, details of cargo, and the name, age, place of birth and wages of each member of the crew.

Administrative / Biographical History

Chester, Cheshire, is the port of registry for all shipping from Flintshire ports on the River Dee. General registration of ships began in the 18th century, when all ships with a deck and burden of more than 15 tons had to be registered with Customs and Excise at their homeport. Records were returned half-yearly to the Registrar of Shipping and Seamen.

Arrangement

The records are filed by year in order of ship's number. Records of ships registered at other ports, but with Flintshire owners, are arranged according to ship name.
