In the years following the disappearance of Sir John Franklin and his northwest passage expedition several relief expeditions were mounted in search of him. The United States Franklin Search Expedition, 1950-1851 (led by De Haven) was one of these. The expedition ships Advance and Rescue sailed along Lancaster Sound before joining the British Franklin Search Expedition, 1850-1851 (leader by William Penny). He also met with the British Naval Franklin Search Expedition, 1850-1851 (leader Horatio Thomas Austin). De Haven's ships were beset in Baffin Bay between September 1850 and June 1851, drifting over 1600 kilometres before breaking free. The search was stopped when it became clear that they could not make any further northward progress and the expedition returned to New York in the Autumn of 1851.

The Institute holds several large collections relating to John Franklin, his expeditions and the subsequent expeditions sent in search of him and his party. It is hoped that information on these collections will be placed on the HUB in due course.
