Administrative / Biographical History

Arthur Leslie Evans (1911-1996) was a schoolteacher, poet and artist and was an enthusiastic collector and prolific writer on the local history of his native Port Talbot and the surrounding district. He wrote numerous books, monographs and articles on the Port Talbot district and illustrated many of his own publications. His published works include The story of Sker House (Neath, 1956), Margam Abbey (Port Talbot, 1958), The story of Taibach and district (1963), Mayors and portreeves of Aberavon and Port Talbot (1987) and Colliery disasters in and around Port Talbot (1989). He was chairman of the Port Talbot Historical Society from 1958 until 1996, and edited the Society's Transactions.
