Edward Hopkins collection

The collection comprises of material relating to time Hopkins spent in the Labrador region during 1860

Edward Payson Hopkins was born in 1843, son of Professor Albert Hopkins, and Louisa Payson. In 1860, Hopkins joined the United States Williams College Greenland Expedition (leader Paul Chadbourne), a small scientific expedition organized at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts. Chadbourne's plan was to land in southwest Greenland before proceeding north from port to port making natural history collections. However, ice kept the expedition offshore until they reached the vicinity of Sukkertoppen where they landed on 20 July 1860 and remained eight days collecting. From there, they sailed south to Godthab where they made more collections. Hopkins wrote an account of the expedition, which is now held by Williams College USA. He died in 1864.
