David Maclaren Cathcart was born on 4 Jan 1904 in Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland. His father was David Maclaren, who worked as a warehouseman. David matriculated into the science faculty at the University of Glasgow, Scotland in 1920 to study engineering and took all his classes at the Royal Technical College. In his first year he studied Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, Physical Laboratory and Engineering Drawing all at Ordinary level. In his second year he studied Mathematics at Higher level, Engineering I, Electrical Engineering 1, Drawing and Laboratory. After this he studied Natural Philosophy at Higher level, Electrical Engineering 11, Engineering IV and Laboratory in his final year, 1922-1923. He did not have the required passes in his exams in 1923 and re-entered the University in 1925 to complete his degree, graduating with a BSc in November. He died on 25 May 1980 at Northwich.
