Scope and Content

South Newington is located 20 miles north east of Oxford and has some of the earliest surviving parish registers in the county.

The earliest two records (PAR180/1/R1/1 and PAR180/4/F1/1) were originally deposited in the Bodleian Library by Rev G.L. Marriott in 1964 followed by the enclosure award in 1966. The remaining material was deposited by the parish in 1980-1981 and originally catalogued Mss.d.d.Par.South Newington. The material was then transferred to Oxfordshire History Centre. Further records were deposited as Acc 141 in February 1949 and originally catalogued as Misc.Marr. Other records were deposited as Acc 2845 in 1988 and Acc 5887 in August 2009.

A conspectus of new and old references is included at the end of this catalogue. Catalogued by Alison Smith in January 2015 with additions in April 2024.
