Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Lord Lieutenants are the representatives of the Crown for each county in the United Kingdom, appointed by the monarch on the advice of the Prime Minister. From its earliest days, the Lord Lieutenancy has been closely associated with the Magistracy. The Lord Lieutenant also became responsible for the organization of all royal visits to the county. A group of Deputy Lieutenants are appointed by the Lord Lieutenant, and a Vice Lord Lieutenant is selected from among these Deputies. Among Lord Lieutenants for Anglesey are William Owen Stanley MP (1802-1884) and Sir Richard Henry Williams-Bulkeley, Bart, K.C.B., who held the position during the first half of the 20th century. During the Second World War, the Lord Lieutenant organised the Local Defence Volunteer Force. In 1974, following local government reorganization, the Lord Lieutenancies for Anglesey, Caernarfonshire and Merionethshire were amalgamated into the Lord Lieutenancy of Gwynedd.
