Ernest Arthur Binstead, known as Arthur, was born in 1863, the second son of Charles Henry Binstead and Elizabeth Bailey. He spent his childhood in Grasmere in the Lake District where his father worked as a land and mineral surveyor. He trained as a solicitor, and in 1915 married Mary Openshaw (1876-1928) in Hastings. A keen amateur artist, he spent most of his adult life in London. Ernest Arthur Binstead died in 1941.

Arthur's wife, Mary Openshaw, was a successful author, writing under her maiden name. His brother, Charles Herbert Binstead, a Minister in the Church of England in the diocese of Hereford, was also President of the British Bryological Society from 1926 until 1928.
