Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
A mediety means a portion of a benefice. Parishes sometimes had two or more benefices, which were held by different incumbents. The archbishop is able, after a formal investigation, to divide the spiritual duties required in the parish between the incumbents of the benefices. The archbishop is also able to suggest, with the agreement of the patrons of the benefice, the consolidation of the medieties into a single benefice.
