Administrative / Biographical History

The British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition, 1929-1931 (leader Sir Douglas Mawson ) sailing in Discovery Captain John King Davis the expedition spent two seasons in the Antarctic. Made collections on Iles Crozet, Iles Kerguelen and Heard Island. The expedition charted and surveyed the coast and islands from Discovery and a plane. A visit to Kemp Land and Enderby Land proved them to be connected. They met the Norwegian (Christensen) Antarctic Expedition, 1929-1930 (leader Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen) on 14 January 1930, near Cape Ann where 45 degrees E was agreed as a boundary between British and Norwegian activities. The territories claimed for Britain during this expedition became the Australian Antarctic Territories.
