Administrative / Biographical History

George Leopold Schwartz 1891 - 1983

George Schwartz was educated at Varndean School, Brighton, and St Paul's Training College, Cheltenham. He served in army during World War I. After the war he studied at the London School of Economics 1918 - 1921. He was secretary of the London Cambridge Economics Service, 1923, and Ernest Cassel lecturer, London University, 1929. Leopold also assisted Sir Arnold Plant (1898 - 1978), with the Wartime Social Survey, 1940. He went on to become Deputy city editor of the Sunday Times and economic adviser to Kemsley newspapers, 1944 - 61. He was editor of Bankers Magazine, 1945 - 54, and contributed a column on economic affairs to Sunday Times, 1961 - 71. Schwartz was also an Honorary Fellow of the LSE.

His publications include:
