Administrative / Biographical History

In 1970 the Britannia Bridge was greatly damaged when five teenagers inadvertantly set fire to it. The damage was so bad that it was widely feared that the bridge would collapse into the Menai Straits. As assessments were carried out as to how best to repair the bridge the then County Surveyor proposed that it should be rebuilt as a two level bridge carrying both trains and road traffic. The proposal was accepted and the bridge was reconstructed accordingly with the spans supported by archways. The new bridge was opened in 1972. D. Stuart Tod, 1905-1995, was the Marine Superintendent during the repairs to the Britannia Bridge.
