Administrative / Biographical History
This expedition was undertaken to further the work of the Board of Longitude and carry out geographical exploration around Svalbard and East Greenland. The expedition ship HM sloop Griper reached a furthest north of 80°21 in July 1823. The expedition made contact with Eskimos in Greenland and explored much of the coast including the discovery of Foster's bay. Foster served as a Midshipman and undertook survey work.
