Scope and Content

The collection comprises of material created during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, [Ross Sea Party], 1914-1917 and correspondence with the geographer and meteorologist Hugh Robert Mill.

Administrative / Biographical History

Andrew Keith Jack was born in Australia in 1885. He joined the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition [Ross Sea Party], 1914-1917 (Captains Mackintosh and Stenhouse), organised by Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton to meet his Weddell Sea Party. Jack was meteorologist and physicist with the Ross Sea Party and also took part in early depot-laying journeys.

During the First World War he became head of the munitions establishment at Maribyrnong. After the war he remained in munitions, becoming secretary of the Operational Safety Committee of the Australian Department of Munitions Supply. He retired in 1950 and died on 26 September 1966.

The collection is split into two sub-fonds, covering the expedition and correspondence with Mill respectively.
