1914 Correspondence

This sub-series comprises 1914 correspondence between C. P. Scott (1846-1932), editor and proprietor of the Manchester Guardian, and contemporary politicians, writers and civil servants including the social theorist J.A. Hobson, the politicians Ramsay MacDonald and Leonard Courtney, and the former Lord Chancellor Lord Loreburn. Topics covered include the Government's heavily criticised foreign and war policy, German imports through neutral states, the German violation of Belgian neutrality [1839 Treaty of London], and the diplomatic negotiations between Edward Grey, Foreign Secretary, and Karl Max, Prince Lichnowsky, German ambassador to Britain.
