Administrative / Biographical History
The British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition, (BANZARE) 1929-1931 (leader Sir Douglas Mawson) made collections on Iles Crozet, Iles Kerguelen and Heard Island. The expedition charted and surveyed the coast and islands from Discovery and a plane. A visit to Kemp Land and Enderby Land proved them to be connected. They met the Norwegian (Christensen) Antarctic Expedition, 1929-1930 (leader Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen) on 14 January 1930, near Cape Ann where 45°E was agreed as a boundary between British and Norwegian activities. The territories claimed for Britain during this expedition became the Australian Antarctic Territories.
