Administrative / Biographical History
The Surrey Institute was created when in 1995 the West Surrey College of Art and Design (Guildford School of Art and Farnham School of Art) merged with the Epsom and Ewell School of Art to form the Surrey Institute of Art and Design.
The adjoining student village at Farnham was designed by architect Nick Evans, and it won the RIBA 1995 Housing Project Award. The new library at Farnham was opened at the end of 1996.
Norman Taylor retired in 1999 and was succeeded by Elaine Thomas.
The new purpose-built Library & Learning Centre (LLC) at Epsom was officially opened 5 December 2001. The building was designed by London architects Gibberd Limited, who had also designed the LLC at Farnham. Guests at the official opening included the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell and fashion designer Geoff Banks.
In 2005 the Kent Institute of Art and Design and the Surrey Institute of Art and Design merged to form the University College for the Creative Arts.
