Southlands Wesleyan Methodist Chapel opened on the corner of Southlands and Bishopthorpe Roads in 1887. Designed by Charles Bell, it comprised a large hall and fifteen classrooms and could accommodate 750 people. An organ was installed in 1893 and a hall was added in 1920 to house the Young Men's Association.
The chapel was originally part of the York, Wesley Circuit of the Wesleyan Methodist Connexion. Following the unification of the Primitive, Wesleyan and United Methodist churches in 1932, York, Wesley and Victoria Bar Circuits merged and Southlands Chapel continued as part of an enlarged Wesley Circuit of what was now a single Methodist Connexion. In 1981 it joined York, South Circuit.
The chapel was repaired in 1977 and modernised in 2000. As of 2016 it is still in use. Since 2012 it has been part of the York Circuit of the Methodist Church.

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws. 24 hours' notice is required to access photographic material.

The archive was deposited at the Borthwick Institute in 1989. Further additions were made to the archive in 1993, 2013, 2014 and 2016.
