The diaries begin in October 1974 and are continuous from then on, becoming detailed from 1977. They are a record of life in York during this period. DBP/1/1 - DBP/1/35 and DBP/1/38 are original handwritten volumes. DBP/1/36 and DBP/1/37 onwards are digital copies stored in the Digital Archive.
Each physical diary, with the exception of DBP/1/38, includes a loose handwritten index of key information in the volume, with relevant page numbers.

Darrell Buttery was born in 1941 and is a leading member of the York community. He taught English in schools in and around York for many years, but was also noted for his work for the City particularly through local societies. He was a member of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society and the York Georgian Society and was President of the York Civic Trust.

Custodial History
The Borthwick Institute originally held photocopies of the diaries for public consultation. Following the death of the creator in 2022, the original diaries were transferred to the Borthwick Institute as part of a bequest, and the photocopies were replaced.
