As explained in the Introduction, the presence of these papers (which include Settlement Certificates, Removal Orders, Bastardy papers, and Apprenticeship Indentures) in this collection is something of a mystery: although Caversfield and Stoke Lyne are neighbouring parishes, they have never been united, and indeed Caversfield was part of Buckinghamshire until the 19th century. PC 255/2/C1/1 below suggests that some, if not all, of these records had been found in the office of the Clerk to the Magistrates at Buckingham, and sent to the Overseers of the Poor at Caversfield, but this does not explain how they then came to be in the papers of Stoke Lyne Parish Council.
