Administrative / Biographical History

The Education Act of 1870 established school boards to fill the gaps in voluntary school provision. The 1902 Education Act (Balfour's Act) replaced school boards with local education authorities (LEAs) who were responsible for all secular and voluntary education provision with the exception of voluntary school buildings, which remained the responsibility of the school governors.
