The list was circulated by the Council for British Archaeology to local government so that they could inform the the Council for British Archaeology and the Ancient Monument Inspectorate (D.O.E. Central Office for Wales (Works)) of any development plans affecting Scheduled Ancient Monuments. The official Scheduled Monuments list is now maintained by CADW, Welsh Government, assisted by Local Archaeogical Trusts in Wales.

Scheduled monuments are nationally important monuments that have been afforded statutory protection through their inclusion in the Schedule of monuments maintained under section 1 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. They have archaeological, architectural, artistic, historic or traditional interest.
