Papers of George Lloyd, 1796-1974 (accumulated [c. 1900]-1974), including research notes, [c. 1959]-1960, personal papers, [c. 1900]-[c. 1974]; photographs, 1903-1966; negatives, [c. 1900]-[c. 1970]; newspaper cuttings, [20th century]; offprints from Flintshire Historical Society Publications, [20th century]; pamphlets, 1796-1974; and printed material (mainly periodicals), 1848-1973.

Administrative / Biographical History

George Lloyd (1888-1974) was born in Shotton, Flintshire. After attending Hawarden Grammar School, he served as an engineering apprentice with Willans and Robinson, of Queensferry, Flintshire, and later became Engineering Works Manager of British Insulated Callendars Cables Ltd. (B. I. C. C.), at Prescot, Lancashire. He retired in 1953. He served in the Machine Gun Corps in the First World War in the Middle East. He was interested in history and archaeology, and undertook substantial research in his spare time. He contributed several articles to the journal of the Flintshire Historical Society, of which he was Vice-President, and to Archaeologia Cambrensis, journal of the Cambrian Archaeological Association, of which he was President in 1966, including articles on the canalization of the River Dee and beacons on the North Wales coast.
