Papers of J. H. Moss general grocer, 6 Bridge Street, Menai Bridge including Account books and Ledgers.

Joseph Henry Moss was born in 1884 in Coedpoeth, Wrexham. He had moved to Menai Bridge by 1911. He married Eleanor Gray Hughes, the daughter of a Menai Bridge baker, in 1920 in Chester. They had one son, Mervyn Gray Moss, born in 1923, who succeeded him in the business in 1947, remaining until his retirement in 1988. Records indicate that Mr Moss was an astute business man and a successful grocer. He kept meticulous records, which were audited on an annual basis. He gave and withdrew credit to customers, had a very well stocked shop, with both grocery and chandlery items, had a network of suppliers, some local individuals, some wholesale providers and some dealings directly with manufacturers. This collection gives an interesting look into the life and times of a high class general grocer in the period 1909 to the late 1960s.
