Material related to railways and railway companies which operated in Nyasaland between 1897-1977. Primarily relates to the lines operated by the Trans-Zambesia Railway Company Limited (TZR), but also includes the Beira Railway Company Limited, the Shire Highlands Railway Limited (SHR), Central Africa Railway (CAR) and the Nyasaland Railway Company (NR).
Contains annual reports and accounts, property deeds and contracts, committee minutes, and tariff books and timetables. Includes correspondence and administrative paperwork related to negotiations between the Portuguese Government, the Mozambique Company, and the Nyasaland Protectorate relating to the construction of the Trans-Zambesia Line. This includes correspondence files between Libert Oury and Joaquim d’Arcos, Portuguese director of the Trans-Zambesi Railway and author and playwright. The subseries contains reports from visiting directors of the Nyasaland Railway Company Limited. Additional material includes correspondence, news-cuttings, and publications relating to the Trans-Zambesia Railway collected by Libert and his son Vivian Oury.
